Diagnostics Team Up with Narrow-Spectrum Antibiotics: Synergistic
Business Opportunities and Evolving Trends
The development of narrow-spectrum or single
pathogen–only antibiotics is increasingly seen as attractive
niche market opportunities. Resistance challenges, antibiotic control
programs in hospitals, escalating health care costs, long development
time lines, regulatory environment challenges, and dry pipelines,
power the trend to more targeted therapies. Driven by the principles
of personalized medicine, the hospital point-of care rapid diagnostic
market promises dramatic market expansion via improved and rapid
tests that are reliable and easy to integrate into hospital routine.
Diagnostic-therapeutic co-development and early partnerships will
be important drivers for targeting the clinical trial population
and accessing markets more rapidly and efficiently. This overview
discusses
• Existing examples for diagnostic-therapeutic partnerships
• Strategies for the clinical development phase
• Regulatory opportunities and pitfalls
• Synergistic strategies for diagnostic and drug development
